I think the issue here is that parents have not taken an active role in monitoring their children's behaviors when they are allowed to use online computing for any reason.
Mindful of that meme pointing out the HUGE difference between a million and a billion by pointing out a million seconds is about a day and a billion seconds is about 1-1/2 years, consider that 6 million dollar award against what Meta made last year, 200 BILLION dollars.
Obviously, Meta and burg boy need a more significant hit before we can say justice played out.
I wouldn't be so fast to blame just 'social media' providers. If it's children that become addicted to social media, isn't it partly due to little or no parental guidance?
Parents cannot monitor every aspect of their child's/children's lives. First, there is the fact they are compelled to trust their children to the agents of the public fool system. They have to show up at work to pay bills.
In the public fool system, children will:
- be indoctrinated by agents who want to make sure the children know all about their abnormal sexual preferences;
- be taught we are worse than forest fires, volcanoes, planet axis shifts and so on for causing changes in climate that have taken place since the planet was formed;
- will be heavily influenced by their peers;

From there, when we familiarize ourselves with the coding that creates the algorithms referenced in the article, and what they are intended to accomplish, it becomes more and more obvious holding big tech and media accountable is more than reasonable.
Keep it simple and go back to the days of cigarette advertising, and the actual product. The attention of the manufacturers was on profit, even when they knew it could be damaging to customers.
And on that parenting thing, I'm better at many things than you. And you are better at many things than me, that is, people can only do their best..

Some public schools are dis-allowing use of phones in classrooms; also in the hallways and lunch rooms. Need much more of that.
