My late father had a stash of gold coins in Europe during the 1980s. At least it wasn't his full investment portfolio and he also had dividend paying gold stocks. By the end of the '80s, he had missed much of one of the late 20th century stock market booms; the Reagan markets. Those coins in Europe were worth the same as they had been when he invested in them in the late 1970s. After he passed in 1992, I was able to sell the coins and get the money back to the US to invest properly for my mother.
The Commerce Dept taking equity stakes in rare earth companies is kinda a big deal that got buried here. 8-16% ownership in a mining company is basically industrial policy through the backdoor. Been seeing this playbook more with MP Materials too. The strategic logic makes sense when China controls like 60% of global rare earth processing but interesting to see goverment equity become the default tool.
Why no mention of silver? It is outperforming gold massively.
